What is this course about?

Masters by research programmes are designed to support candidates who wish to embark on a course of independent research in a field of art and design of their choice. Successful candidates are typically motivated by a specific topic which requires an extended period of dedicated investigation. They are typically highly motivated and describe their own programme of research in a proposal submitted as part of the application process. The course helps develop specific knowledge in a field of the candidate’s choice and supports the transferable research skills through a selection of optional postgraduate modules.

What will you be doing?

The work you do as part of a Masters by research programme is typically determined by your own professional interests and creative practice. If your interest lies within an area such as sculpture, painting, photography, film, printmaking, mixed-media, interactive art, electronic art, graphic design or applied art, then the programme will facilitate you mastering a specific aspect of that practice. The programme activities are wrapped specifically around the professional interests you outline in a research proposal. The development of the research over the course of the programme is then supported by a panel of supervisors dedicated to overseeing the project.
Masters by research are also available in fields that relate to art and design history, visual culture, art education, and art therapy.

Why do this course?

  • Students will often select a Masters by Research if they wish to focus independently on a specific theme or topic which is important either to their art and design practice or to the professional field in which they work.
  • The Masters by research allows candidates to submit their own programme of study through the form of a project proposal which they submit as part of the application process.
  • The student gains a comprehensive understanding of the research methodologies applicable to their field of study.
