What is the course about?

The Masters in Journalism and Digital Content Creation programme blends journalistic tools and techniques with content creation using new technologies and digital media to prepare students for the new media workplace. The programme has a strong connection with the media industry. Graduates of this programme are well equipped with the requirements to operate as today’s digital journalists and content creators. 

What will you be doing?

Subject areas included journalism, digital content creation, social media, broadcasting, media history, news writing, editing, research, multimedia/creative digital media production, audio-visual production, media law, features and web writing.

Why do this course?

• Journalism graduates from MTU are highly trained in the skills of journalism and digital content creation. As well as its value in the journalism business, students’ ability to write, to tell stories, to shoot video and create audio – i.e. digital content creation and storytelling - is highly valued in areas such as marketing, advertising, public relations and general communications. As well as journalism, our graduates have also found jobs in these areas.
• Practical assignments: Since the course began there has been a strong connection with industry, including the Irish Examiner, RTE, RedFM, the Irish Independent and Newstalk. Each year, students invite industry leaders to a media seminar that explores current trends in media.

• There is a strong emphasis on documentary making in semester 3 of the programme. In April 2018, the first ever international student documentary showcase, FilmCraftCork, was held in MTU. This will be an annual event and Journalism students will have the opportunity both to showcase their documentaries at the festival and to be involved in its organisation through the Event Management elective module.
• FilmCraftCork is part of a network of student documentary festivals, which are held in the Netherlands, the UK, Portugal, Belgium, South Africa and New York. MTU students can also submit their documentary work to these festivals.
