This is an innovative interdisciplinary programme with an emphasis in three main material areas, Ceramics, Glass and Textiles, either as a chosen specialism, or in combination. It offers students the opportunity to creatively develop and make objects. The emphasis is on an open and experimental exploration grounded in historical context and current critical debate about contemporary practice. This course offers a creative and playful approach to materials and idea development in Ceramics, Glass, and Textiles with a strong emphasis on practical skills, conceptual development and self-directed exploration.
The teaching of this course is centred on ‘thinking through making’ and is delivered through a programme of: skills development workshops, lectures, group seminars & critiques, individual tutorials, peer and independent learning. In the final year students will develop and execute an original body of work and undertake a written thesis, which explores the intellectual aspects and implications of the work. Students are encouraged to pursue opportunities within the programme for international exchange and placement. The Contemporary Applied Art course is delivered in the Sharman Crawford Street campus.
Modules include: Studio Practice, Applied Art History, Drawing, Ceramics, Glass, Textiles, Mould-making, Professional Practice, Contemporary Applied Art Practice and more!
The Materials and Equipment Fee is specific to programmes CR_AACER_8 (Contemporary Applied Art) & CR_AFAFA_8 (Fine Art), and is used to support students general materials and equipment. The fee is set at €100 for 1st year students.
Part-time students pay the full fee of €100 but no further charge is made to them until they complete year 1. There is no fee for repeat or exam-only students – they will have to source their own materials, these can be purchased at the material store. Students will receive 50% back if they withdraw before the 31st October. This fee is not funded by Susi and must be paid in Semester 1.
