AREAS OF EXPERTISE: FINE ART
Dr. Donal Moloney studied at the Crawford College of Art (BA), the Slade School of Fine Art (MFA) and University of the Arts London (PhD). He is an Associate member of the Higher Education Academy.
Moloney’s research interests and recent publications centre on debates surrounding contemporary painting as well as the interplay between specular highlights, the Lacanian 'gaze' and Cartesian perspectivalism. In his art practice he makes intricate paintings that contain fragments of images from a wide variety of sources (drawings, sculptures, digital collages, etc.). Through a slow and protracted process of painting, these images are transformed into something jewel-like and precious, becoming a vehicle for Moloney’s interest in fantastical imagery and ambiguous narratives.
Moloney has received numerous awards for his practice and research including the John Moores Visitors Choice Award (2016), shortlisted for the Denton’s Art Prize (2018) and longlisted for the Contemporary British Painting Prize (2019).
