Observations in Print is an exhibition of fine art prints by artists Íde Ní Shúileabháin, Ailbhe Barrett, Bríd Hefferrnan, John Keating and Rosaleen Moore produced during their ongoing supported studio workshops at Cork Printmakers in 2020 & 2021. 

The exhibition explores the artists individual styles and practices and observations from still life, portraits, landscapes and the built environment, translating them through various screenprinting processes into both two and three dimensional works. 

In 2019 Cork Printmakers launched the supported printmaking course for artists with diverse needs led by Mairead O’Callaghan, an art facilitator at Crawford Supported Studios and one of the founding members/technicians of Cork Printmakers, and Peter McMorris, Artist and Cork Printmakers’ Studio Manager. 

Established in 1991, Cork Printmakers is a professional print studio, gallery and resource organisation providing artists with facilities and equipment to create artwork through the medium of print. Located at Wandesford Quay in the heart of Cork City it supports and promotes the creation and development of new work through our studios, exhibitions, events, and education programme, promoting the highest standards of practice in printmaking.

The MTU Gallery at 46 Grand Parade is a gallery based in MTU Crawford College of Art & Design’s building at 46 Grand Parade in Cork City centre. It recognises the importance of creative expression within all disciplines, and aims to foster learning and engagement through and in visual arts. In response to current restrictions, the gallery has run window exhibitions since October 2020 to continue engaging in visual conversation with its audiences across the MTU community and general public.

This project is funded through the 2020 Cork City Council Art in Context Award.

About the Artists and Facilitiators:


Íde Ní Shúileabháin is an artist with different intellectual ability based in Cork. She is part of the Crawford Supported Studio. Íde embraces everyday familiar objects and ojects found in her studio or home to create dynamic and playful still life artworks, utilising a confident line and strong colours and humour to bring the obejcts to life. Íde’s previous projects and exhibitions include Flat Iron Gallery, New York; Paul Barwell Gallery of Contemporary Art, Colombia; Crawford Arts Gallery, Cork; Cork Public Museum and Sirius Arts Centre, Corbh. A number of her works have been acquired for the National Collection. In 2019 íde was awarded a funded Arts & Disability Residency at Cork Printmakers. 

Ailbhe Barrett is a visual artist from Cork and a member of Crawford Supported Studio. Her work is concerned with storytelling and communicating a narrative. Ailbhe Is also interested in the life of an artwork beyond the studio; the space where the audience and her artwork meet. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, appeared on The Late Late Show in 2015 promoting the exhibition Beyond, in which she exhibited work and presented a TedxTalks in 2017. In 2020 Ailbhe was awarded an Arts and Disability Connect mentoring grant to work with Artist Kevin Mooney. 
Ailbhe has exhibited nationally and intrnationall including Gallerie Outsider Art, Amsterdam; Canberra Australia; Paul Bardwell Gallery of Contemporary Art; Boyle Arts Festival; Crawford Art Gallery.

Bríd Hefferrnan has just been awarded the Arts and Disability Connect Scheme, Mentoring Award 2017 Bríd is a member of Crawford Supported Studio. She formally worked as artist in residence at Mayfield Art Centre in 2008 until 2018 as part of Cúig Supported Studios. Bríd takes inspiration from the world of style and fashion in particular, incorporating elements of pattern and vivid colours in her work. Bríd has experimented with various materials working primarily with mixed media, drypoint, etchings and drawing with acrylic inks.
Bríd has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally inluding Kings Hall, Belfast, Galleria Outsider Art, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Germany, Southbank, London, Canberra Australia, New York, Columbia, Crawford gallery Cork and many national venues.

John Keating  is an artist from Cork who works in GASP artists studio programme. He works on a variety of topics with a focus on the media of drypoint etching. His etching have a very unique style with strong lines. He also works on mixed media drawings using ink pens with coffee and colour pastels. He has exhibited in Crawford Art Gallery - Cork, Sirius Arts Centre - Cobh, and at a number of  smaller galleries and venues

Rosaleen Moore is inspired by her home city of Cork. After walking through the city, examining the buildings and seeking out things to paint, she returns to studio and composes her pieces from memory. Experimenting with colour mixing is a very important part of Rosaleen’s process. She makes Cork City look like a magical place, enhancing it with vibrant colours and the additional details from her imagination. Her composition and placement of elements is unique,  buildings can be turned inside out, and people can float on land or in the sky creating beautiful composition.

Mairead O’Callaghan was one of the founding members/technicians of cork printmakers in 1991. She later trained and worked as an art teacher. Following further studies in education, undertaking a MA in Art in Education (2016), which included art therapy and arts facilitation modules, a new understanding of the role of art in enabling meaningful learning for life for the learner with an intellectual/social disability emerged. Volunteering in a supported studio, she witnessed artists living, working and identifying first and foremost as artists and living meaningful, rewarding and socially engaging lives. She currently is an arts facilitator at Crawford Supported Studio, facilitating others to engage their creativity.

Peter Mc Morris an artist and is the Studio Manager at Cork Printmakers. He has a BA in Fine Art from the Crawford College of Art and Design and graduated with a first class honours degree in 2005. He works in various artistic mediums enjoying the flexibility of exploring new techniques. He has exhibited throughout Ireland and on an international scale in countries including Spain, China and America.  Within his practice he creates site specific permanent artworks, engaging with communities, staff, stakeholders and professionals. He has completed a number of public art commissions within budget and on time including HSE, South Lee Mental Health Unit Per Cent for Art Commission, Cork; Nenagh Hospital Per Cent for Art Commission,  Tipperary;  Tullamore Rights for the Elderly Art Commission, Offaly; Mountmellick Library and Art Gallery Per Cent for Art Commission, Laois. Peter’s work is held in a number of public and private art collections including the Tyndall Institute, H.S.E. State Art Collections, O.P.W. State Art Collections and University College Cork.

A supported studio is a sustained creative environment for individuals with specific health or social needs. Supported Studios provide technical artistic support, networks and audiences outside the health and social care settings.

About MTU Gallery at 46 Grand Parade
The MTU Gallery at 46 Grand Parade, former CIT Wandesford Quay Gallery, is a gallery based in MTU Crawford College of Art & Design’s buildings.
With current restrictions the gallery has had to restrict public access, and runs a window exhibitions and projects since March 2020.
 
The gallery recognizes the importance of creative expression within all disciplines, and engage a visual conversation with its audiences/ be they staff, students alumni or the general public. The main aim for this gallery is to foster learning and education through and in visual arts, that can grow visual arts appreciation in all areas of life.
