What is the course about?
This course is an introduction to the art of digital video production across a range of moving image practices. The course is designed to facilitate a hands-on approach in mastering the basic skills and techniques required to proficiently shoot, edit, and share video content. Students are introduced to the use of camcorders and DSLR cameras for shooting video, smartphone apps and portable audio recorders for recording sound, and video editing techniques and software. Principles of the moving image language will be explored through storyboarding and camerawork. It is expected that students will work outside of class hours to create video content to develop a short video project for group discussion and analysis.
Tutor Profile
Lecturer Colette Lewis is a visual artist and educator working in lens-based digital media and social art practices. She has taught lens-based media for over ten years in various institutions in Ireland. She received an MA in Visual Art Practices from Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology. Her work has been exhibited and screened in Ireland, UK and France including the Short Irish Film Showcase, Liverpool Irish Festival, IndieCork Film Festival, EV+A International, Limerick and TULCA, Visual Arts Festival Galway. She has received numerous funding awards for her practice from the Arts Council of Ireland and Cork City Council. Colette has a studio at the Cork Artists Collective, is a Board of Directors member, and was a founding member of The Guesthouse.
Accreditation
These part-time, evening courses provide students with an opportunity to experience the potential of visual arts practice, through sustained engagement with materials, techniques, processes, research and art contexts. Each course is an accredited module (5 credits) on the National Framework of Qualifications, where 60 credits equate to the workload of a full-time academic year on a degree programme. It may be possible, therefore, to use these credits as part of one of our full-time programmes in the Department of Fine Art and Applied Art. Students interested in pursuing this option should contact crawford.enquiries@mtu.ie and bear in mind that they would need to submit work for assessment at the end of the module.
