Masters by research programmes are designed to support candidates who wish to embark on a course of independent research in a field of art and design of their choice. Successful candidates are typically motivated by a specific topic which requires an extended period of dedicated investigation. They are typically highly motivated and describe their own programme of research in a proposal submitted as part of the application process. The course helps develop specific knowledge in a field of the candidate’s choice and supports the transferable research skills through a selection of optional postgraduate modules.
The work you do as part of a Masters by research programme is typically determined by your own professional interests and creative practice. If your interest lies within an area such as sculpture, painting, photography, film, printmaking, mixed-media, interactive art, electronic art, graphic design or applied art, then the programme will facilitate you mastering a specific aspect of that practice. The programme activities are wrapped specifically around the professional interests you outline in a research proposal. The development of the research over the course of the programme is then supported by a panel of supervisors dedicated to overseeing the project.
Masters by research are also available in fields that relate to art and design history, visual culture, art education, and art therapy.
